what others sometimes see first

There are moments in life when someone notices something in us that we have never thought to notice ourselves.

Not because they're seeing someone different…but because they're seeing us from a place we simply can't.

After all…we spend our lives looking through our own eyes.

We know the days we questioned ourselves more than anyone else ever did….maybe that's why it's so hard to notice the quiet ways we've grown.

Then, every so often, someone says something that catches us completely off guard…

"You have such a calming presence."

"I always feel lighter after talking with you."

"You're stronger than you realize."

And instead of simply saying thank you, we pause…

Really?

Are you sure you're talking about ME?

Maybe you've experienced something like that too…not because you were looking for reassurance, but because what they saw didn't quite match the story you had been carrying about yourself…

I've been wondering lately how often we remember our struggles while other people remember our strength.

We remember how afraid we felt, but someone else remembers that we showed up anyway.

We remember our uncertainty, but someone else remembers our steadiness.

And while we remember the questions that kept us awake at night, someone else remembers that we listened without rushing them...or made them feel a little less alone.

It makes me wonder if we're sometimes so close to the weight we're carrying that we miss the person God is quietly shaping beneath it.

Growth rarely announces itself….sometimes it happens so gently that other people begin to notice it before we do.

A tree never watches itself grow, it simply continues reaching toward the light. And then one day, someone rests beneath its shade…or reaches for its fruit.

Perhaps this, too, is one of God’s quiet mercies.

That every now and then, He allows another person to reflect back a glimpse of what He has already been cultivating within us.

Not because our worth depends on their words, but because sometimes gratitude begins with seeing what we could not yet see in ourselves.

A reflection for the week ahead: is there something beautiful about yourself that you've struggled to believe…even when someone else has gently reflected it back to you?
